HiEMA | Maui Relief Data Pipeline

Partnered with HiEMA and FEMA to support data reconciliation and build a structured pipeline for tracking financial assistance after the 2023 Maui wildfires — enabling clearer reporting and faster decision-making...

In the aftermath of the 2023 Maui wildfires, the Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency (HiEMA) faced a monumental task — coordinating recovery efforts, reconciling financial support data, and tracking the impact across thousands of affected residents and families.

Kendizo was brought in to support the data strategy and analysis work behind that response. Our team worked closely with HiEMA and other agencies, including FEMA, to organize and reconcile the financial assistance data distributed during the recovery effort. In addition to ad hoc analysis and stakeholder coordination, we built a structured data pipeline to streamline reconciliation workflows and ensure consistency across systems.

This pipeline enabled faster, more accurate tracking of funds disbursed and improved visibility into who had been reached, where gaps existed, and how resources were flowing across different support channels. It also provided a reliable foundation for future reporting, audit readiness, and long-term disaster response planning.

Our role was to bring clarity to a complex and emotionally charged situation — helping ensure that state and federal resources were being directed appropriately and transparently. While we weren’t on the ground, our contribution helped decision-makers see the full picture and respond with speed, structure, and accountability.
